Blue Hole Introduction

A large circular rock pool, that is totally surrounded by rock. Although waves can overtop the outer section of rock, there is a large underwater arch way into the open sea. The Blue Hole gives scuba divers easy access to the open sea and is one of the most popular shore dives in both Malta & Gozo.

In rough weather the sea surges both over the protective rocks that can be seen at the far side of the Blue hole, and through the underwater arch in the rock wall

  • The blue hole is a clear large rock pool about 10 metres in diameter and near to where the the Azure window used to stand.
  • The hole can be viewed from the surrounding rocks, or follow the rough path over sharp rocks to the waters edge
  • Very spectacular to view in rough weather, but view from a safe location.

Diving & Snorkeling - The blue hole, Gozo

Diving & Snorkeling
  • The blue hole has been voted into Europe's top 10 dive sites and one of the most dived, dive site on Gozo
  • The blue hole is a circular formation of limestone rock creating a clear large rock pool leading to an enjoyable and memorable dive area
  • The pool has an impressive underwater arch at around 8 - 15 metres giving access to the open sea for divers and snorkelers,.and the various dive sites on the outside.
  • Our earlier warning of:Because rocks are dropping from the Azure window, was very true. The entire arch and supporting pillar of rock has now become a victim of the sea and tottaly collaped.   we recommend that divers and snorkelers do not venture under or near the arch
  • Within the 16 metre deep hole is a cave
  • In the immediate area are sheer underwater drop off,. chimneys to swim up, and arches to swim through. The sea bed is strewn with large boulders
  • Sea life:
    • Octopi
    • Starfish
    • Bristle worms
    • Cardinal fish, grouper, rays, jacks
    • Sea urchins
    • Colourful sponges
    • Moray eel
  • Average underwater visibility 35 metres
